Erol Tutumluer, PhD

Dr. Erol Tutumluer is Abel Bliss Professor specializing in Transportation Geotechnics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He has been involved in railway research for approximately 20 years. He has worked on several high priority projects investigating effects of ballast degradation on track performance, long-term performance of track stiffness transitions, field imaging and characterization of ballast, modeling ballast behavior and investigation of tie support conditions based on an image-aided Discrete Element Method (DEM) and, more recently, Federal Railroad Administration’s Smart Track and Automated Mobile Ballast Scanning Platform projects. Dr. Tutumluer is a Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Transportation Geotechnics Elsevier journal and a member of the AREMA Committee 1 on Ballast.
