Erol Tutumluer

Dr. Erol Tutumluer is Abel Bliss Professor specializing in Transportation Geotechnics in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He has been involved in railway research for approximately 20 years. He has worked on several high priority projects investigating effects of ballast fouling and degradation on track performance, long-term performance of track stiffness transitions, field imaging of ballast, modeling ballast behavior and investigation of tie support conditions based on an image-aided Discrete Element Method (DEM). Dr. Tutumluer is a member of the AREMA Committee 1 on Ballast and he has authored/ co-authored over 350 peer-reviewed publications from his research projects. Dr. Tutumluer is the Editor-in-Chief of Elsevier’s Transportation Geotechnics journal and he is the Chair of the ISSMGE Technical Committee 202 on Transportation Geotechnics.
