Wolfgang Birk

Predge AB


Wolfgang Birk is Professor of Automatic Control and member of the board at Luleå University of Technology and Head of Analytics at Predge AB. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from University of Saarland, Germany (1997) and a Ph.D. degree in Automatic Control from Luleå University of Technology (2002). He is member of the Renewable Heating and Cooling technology platform and active member of the working group on district heating and thermal storage. Birk represents Luleå University of Technology in the Distric Heating and Cooling Technology Platform DHC+ and at the Sustainable Digital Infrastructure Alliance (SDIA).

His research is in the areas of process control and estimation theory, where the results have market solutions for monitoring, control and optimization of large scale systems, efficient distribution of heat in thermal grids, detection of drowsy drivers, active steering in trucks, and analytics and decision support for damage detection and condition monitoring (including forecasting) in heavy haul vehicle operation.

Birk is co-founder of several spin-off companies like e.g. Sentiente+ and is one of the owners of Predge AB, which provides analytics and decision support solutions for operation and maintenance in the railway industry, process industry and the energy sector.
